An overview of the EJS ACT-PD Clinical Trial.
About Us
What is EJS ACT-PD
The Edmond J Safra Accelerating Clinical Trials for Parkinson’s Disease (EJS ACT-PD) Initiative was created in 2021 with the goal of revolutionising Parkinson’s research. Funded by the Edmond J Safra Foundation, we brought together experts from across the UK and internationally, including people affected by Parkinson’s a more efficient clinical trial that would find answers faster.
The initiative’s focus was on addressing challenges is how research studies usually work, to make them faster and more efficient. Most clinical trials only test one treatment at a time and then stop once that study ends. Before the next trial can begin, there is often a long wait while new funding is found, new sites are set up, and new participants are recruited, meaning its infrastructure has to be rebuilt again from scratch. With Parkinson’s being one of the fastest-growing neurological conditions in the world, we needed a better way to speed-up how we find answers.
Together with people with Parkinson’s and their carers/ partners, we have designed and launched the first multi-arm, multi-stage (MAMS) platform trial for Parkinson’s disease in the UK!
Now that the EJS ACT-PD trial has opened to recruitment, the Initiative is working hard to support it’s ongoing evolution and long-term sustainability. This includes selecting future treatment arms, exploring new outcome measures and innovative ways of capturing change in disease progression, and securing funding to continue improving the trial’s efficiency and ensuring it can run until we find a treatment that slows or stops Parkinson’s progression. We are keen to collaborate with new partners and organisations to keep improving both the trial and the wider Parkinson’s research field. You can read more about possible collaboration opportunities here.
